Giggles, Grunts and Cheers

I did a repeat Assembly at Auckland Park Preparatory School on Wednesday, for the Foundation Phase girls . Grades 0 to 3 are the right age for the book, so I read the story to them after a little preamble on the Suez traffic jam to give them the background. The girls also immediately saw, from the original photo, the humour of the tiny excavator and the huge ship. I was delighted with the way they giggled in all the right places. There’s lots of scope for interactive story-telling in ‘The Digger that Did’, so they dug and pushed with Digger, tugged and hauled with the tugboats and slurped and sucked with the dredgers. When the Evergiven floated free, we all cheered, teachers included
I was touched that so many of the Grade 3 girls of 2021 ordered signed copies of the book. So did many of the teachers, which was very kind. It’s a strange feeling, autographing my own book. Strange, but good.
Grateful thanks to Mrs Chantel Jarvis, the head of school, who gave me the Assembly opportunities, and to Marcelle M’Crystal, Kay Cottrell and Eleni Ladas for their help in setting up the technology for the presentation. I really liked using the electronic pointer!
